What is Cialis?

Cialis is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (commonly known as impotence). Cialis is available as a ‘when required’ tablet to be taken half an hour before intercourse or is also available as the ‘daily’ form which is more convenient for men who anticipate sexual activity twice or more per week.

How do I take it?

Cialis ‘as required’ should be taken at least half an hour before sexual intercourse.

The starting dose is 10mg but this can be adjusted according to response. Those who find the 10mg dose ineffective can try the 20mg dose.

You must not take Cialis ‘as required’ more than once a day and you cannot repeat the dose more than once every two days as the effects of the medicine last for up to 36 hours.

If you anticipate sexual activity more than twice a week, it is recommended for you to take Cialis Daily as a lower once a day dose. Cialis Daily is taken every day so that you are able to have intercourse at any time.

What are the side effects?

Side effects can include:

  • Headache
  • Back pain and muscle aches
  • Facial flushing
  • Indigestion and reflux

Other treatments are available for erectile dysfunction:

If your erectile dysfunction is situational, for example, you still have an early morning erection, then psychosexual therapy may be helpful. You can access registered therapists on www.counselling-directory.org.uk  Alternatively, call or email us here and we can arrange a referral.

For further information on treatments for erectile dysfunction, including complementary treatments such as kegel exercises (which strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor and can be helpful for patients with ED) please see the NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Erectile-dysfunction/Pages/Treatment.asp

What if my erection won’t go away?

Prolonged and painful erections can occur rarely with Cialis use. If your erection lasts for more than 4 hours, you must seek immediate medical advice.

Can I drink alcohol with Cialis?

Cialis is not affected by alcohol. However, one of the side effects of Cialis is dizziness and excess alcohol can have this same effect. You must be careful not to stand up too quickly and keep an eye on your blood pressure. Patients with LOW blood pressure must not take Cialis.

Can I take other medication?

Cialis does interact with certain other medicines, particularly nitrates. If you are unsure about whether you can take Cialis with your current medication, please read the patient information leaflet or contact us in the pharmacy on 0161 707 6800.
