What you need to know about Priligy

Priligy is a medicine used to treat premature ejaculation for men (PE).

How do I take it?

Priligy comes as 30mg and 60mg tablets. Standard dose is 30mg but if that is not effective, you can try 60mg on your next order.

One Priligy tablet should be taken whole with a glass of water at least one hour before sexual intercourse. You can take Priligy with or without food. You can only take Priligy once a day.

Effectivenes

In clinical trials, Priligy was shown to extend sexual performance time by 200%-300%.

What are the side effects?

Side effects can include:

  • Headaches, nausea and dizziness.

Speak to your doctor before taking Priligy if:

  • You use recreational drugs
  • You have a mental health problem such as depression or bipolar disorder
  • If you have LOW blood pressure (suffering from dizziness)
  • You have epilepsy, heart problems, a history of bleeding or blood clotting problems, kidney problems or are at risk of glaucoma

Other treatments are available for erectile dysfunction:

If your erectile dysfunction is situational, for example, you still have an early morning erection, then psychosexual therapy may be helpful. You can access registered therapists on www.counselling-directory.org.uk  Alternatively, call or email us here and we can arrange a referral.

For further information on treatments for erectile dysfunction, including complementary treatments such as kegel exercises (which strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor and can be helpful for patients with ED) please see the NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Erectile-dysfunction/Pages/Treatment.asp

What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is when a man ejaculates early during intercourse , typically less than 2 minutes after penetration. Average male latency time is 7 minutes.

Premature ejaculation affects around 30-40% of men in the UK. It can be cause by prostate problems or urinary tract infections; the main cause is often psychological. PE can cause distress and relationship problems and can impact the emotional well- being and health of sufferers.

Does it really work?

Men who last up to 2 minutes have been shown in clinical trials to have their ejaculatory latency time increase by 200-300%.

For men who last between 2 and 7 minutes, Priligy may still be effective but clinical trials have not been done on this category of patient. You can still try Priligy but clinical effectiveness has not yet been proven for these patients.

Patients who last longer than 7 minutes are not considered to have a PE problem.

Can I take Priligy with Viagra?

NO. Priligy and Viagra interact with each other and must not be taken at the same time. Both Priligy and Viagra cause low blood pressure which can lead to fainting, dizziness and collapses.

Taking Priligy with alcohol can cause side effects such as feeling dizzy, sleepy or having slow reactions. It is NOT recommended to take Priligy with alcohol as it may increase your risk of fainting or other side effects.

What is the difference between Priligy and Viagra? (or other Erectile Dysfunction medicines)

They work in different ways;

Priligy affects the levels of a neurotransmitter in the body called serotonin; PE is thought to be linked to the reabsorption of serotonin happening too quickly during ejaculation. Priligy is known as a ‘selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor’ (SSRI) and prevents the serotonin being reabsorbed as quickly during ejaculation. SSRIs are also a category of medicine used in the treatment of depression however the difference with Priligy is that it is fast acting and leaves the body relatively quickly giving the body a fast burst of serotonin (unlike traditional SSRI medicines used to treat depression which act at lower doses over longer periods of time).

Viagra and other medicines for erectile dysfunction work by acting on a chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. This relaxes blood vessels and improves the flow of blood to the penis. Following sexual stimulation, Viagra will help to maintain an erection.
