Medicine Info

What is Viagra (Sildenafil)?

Viagra (Sildenafil) is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (commonly known as impotence).

Viagra and Sildenafil are the same drug; Sildenafil is the active ingredient contained in the branded product Viagra. Pfizer manufacture the branded Viagra product and last year their patent ran out allowing other manufacturers to supply the drug. A number of companies now make Sildenafil meaning that the price has come down substantially and Men’s Pharmacy can pass this discount onto our customers. Men’s Pharmacy only supplies Sildenafil products from UK licensed manufacturers.

Instructions for use and recommended dosage

Viagra (Sildenafil) should be swallowed whole with water around one hour before sexual intercourse.

The starting dose is 50mg but this can be increased to 100mg if the 50mg dosage is not effective enough. For patients who experience side effects, 25mg dosage can also be taken.

If taken with food, particularly a meal with a high fat content, it can take longer for the medicine to start working.

For this medicine to work to its full effect, it is advised not to drink alcohol as alcohol can impair erectile function.

You must not take more than 100mg daily of Sildenafil/ Viagra. Clinical trials have found that doses of 200mg did not result in increased efficacy but the incidence of adverse reactions (dizziness, headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dyspepsia and altered vision) were increased. There have also been reports of rhabdomyolysis (a breakdown in skeletal muscle tissue the byproducts of which can lead to kidney failure), visual perception changes, vertebral artery dissection (a tear in the artery supplying blood to the brain), heart attacks and aggressive behaviour in patients taking more than 100mg daily.

If the 100mg strength doesn’t work for you, please contact our doctor ([email protected]) or your local GP as there may be underlying conditions that are causing this and there may be alternatives you can try.

We recommend that all men taking medicine for ED have regular tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and hormone imbalances.

Other treatments are available for erectile dysfunction:

If your erectile dysfunction is situational, for example, you still have an early morning erection, then psychosexual therapy may be helpful. You can access registered therapists on www.counselling-directory.org.uk  Alternatively, call or email us here and we can arrange a referral.

For further information on treatments for erectile dysfunction, including complementary treatments such as kegel exercises (which strengthen the muscles in the pelvic floor and can be helpful for patients with ED) please see the NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Erectile-dysfunction/Pages/Treatment.asp

How does Viagra work?

Viagra (Sildenafil) works by acting on a chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. This relaxes blood vessels and improves the flow of blood to the penis. Following sexual stimulation, Viagra will help to maintain an erection.

Further information about Viagra

Known as a 'magic' blue pill for men, Viagra is a drug manufactured by Pfizer as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Viagra was originally being developed as a treatment to improve blood flow in patients suffering from hypertension and angina pectoris - improved erections just happened to be a side effect.

The active chemical is Sildenafil Citrate - Viagra is merely the branded version of this drug.

What does Viagra do?

Viagra treats erectile dysfunction, a very common problem in men that has a number of different causes.

The inability to get an erection will happen to most men at some point in their lives but if it is happening regularly then you are likely suffering from erectile dysfunction.

Buying Viagra

There are two options available if you want to buy Viagra:

  1. 1) Consult your doctor and obtain a prescription to pick it up in person.
  2. 2) Have your consultation online and have your order delivered to your front door

Obviously, the latter option is far easier and more discreet as it removes the need for any face to face contact.

Viagra is available in two forms - Sildenafil and Viagra. Generic Sildenafil is purely the unbranded version of Viagra as Sildenafil Citrate is the active ingredient in Viagra. There is no difference between the two other than the price.

Buying Viagra Online

According to Pfizer, 80% of sites claiming to sell Viagra were counterfeits. So, the first thing you should do when buying medication online is to ensure you are doing so from a trustworthy site.

Before buying any medication online, make sure the pharmacy has been approved by the General Medical Council and also authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to sell medicines online.

Any website selling Viagra without displaying this information, or selling Viagra without a prescription is fraudulent.

Cheap Viagra UK

The patent on Sildenafil Citrate ended in the UK in 2013, meaning since then pharmacies have been able to sell generic Viagra at a much lower cost, while still having the same potency dose for dose.

Price of Viagra

The price of Viagra comes down to the amount you buy and whether you opt for generic or branded Viagra.

For example, here at Mens Pharmacy 16 tablets of generic Sildenafil will set you back £48.00 but, the same amount of branded Viagra will cost you £140.00!

Additional Information

How do I take Viagra?

Viagra takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour to take effect. Although it might work more quickly in some people, you should aim to take it up to 1 hour before intercourse.

The effects of Viagra can last up to 4 hours - If you have an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours, consult a doctor immediately.

Viagra Dosage

Viagra 25mg

This is the lowest available dosage. It would be most suited for men taking certain types of medication, or those who have experienced side effects after trying a higher dose.

Viagra 50mg

The most common dosage and likely what your doctor will prescribe if you are taking Viagra for the first time.

Viagra 100mg

100mg is the highest dosage available for Viagra. It is usually reserved for men that have tried 50mg and not had the desired effect (an erection hard enough for penetration).

Additional Information

Does Viagra make you last longer

Viagra does not decrease premature ejaculation. It does, however, decrease the time required to get another erection after ejaculation.

Additional Information

Viagra alternatives

Viagra is the iconic and most well-known treatment for erectile dysfunction, but if you've tried it and it wasn't quite right for you there are a number of alternatives that we offer at Mens Pharmacy such as Cialis, and Levitra.
